Combating unsafe abortion is key to improving maternal health.

Abstract

It is argued that there is evidence that improving access to contraceptive and safe abortion services is cost effective in comparison with dealing with the after effects of unsafe abortions. Measures that would reduce the incidence of unsafe abortion are listed and 4 areas for action are identified as: provide comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services; make the links between unsafe abortion and maternal health; make the economic argument for access to safe abortion services; and involve men.
