Coastal conservation through enterprise at Rekawa Lagoon, Sri Lanka.
Abstract
This case study reports on successes that were achieved in natural resource management where a low-income traditional-type village stakeholder coastal community in Sri Lanka, was motivated to unite and self-regulate fishing pressure on the resource so that the entire community benefitted. It reviews the factors that contributed to this success and the constraints that were experienced. It demonstrates how the economic value of a coastal lagoon habitat was enhanced by stocking the lagoon with the economically valuable shrimp resource and describes how this led the community to protect the coastal habitat to ensure high levels of shrimp production.
