Abstract

This Policy Note addresses how Mozambique law currently affects property inheritance, the challenges and opportunities in existing law reform, and the issues surrounding how inheritance is governed and practised in people’s lives in Mozambique. Customary law remains dominant over inheritance practices in many areas of the country; engagement with customary leaders and investment in decentralised access to services is essential to ensure protection of widows’ and orphaned children’s property rights.
