Abstract

This is the response to a DEWPoint helpdesk enquiry. In order to reduce material costs for a school buildings project in the Democratic Republic of Congo, advice was sought on suitable alternative mortar and rendering mixes and building blocks. The suitability of soil or concrete blocks for building construction is discussed, and different mortar and render mixtures are suggested.

This report was produced by DEW Point, a Resource Centre for Environment, Water and Sanitation, that was funded by DFID and managed by a consortium of companies led by Harewelle International Limited. The Resource Centre closed in 2012.
