Brief: The Sustainability and Quality of Village Savings and Loans Groups under CLP-1 and CLP-2

Abstract

The first phase of the Chars Livelihoods Programme (CLP-1) worked to eliminate extreme poverty on the island chars of North West Bangladesh. The end of CLP-1 in March 2010 and the withdrawal of support provide the opportunity to assess the sustainability of some activities. One activity which has been scaled up under CLP-2 is the Village Savings and Loans (VSL) project. This briefing assesses the sustainability of VSLGs under CLP-1 and reviews performance of VSLG's established during CLP-2.
