Bago-Talawanda-Bagamoyo District - Pwani Region. Construction Report, April 2012

Abstract

There are currently no paved district roads in Tanzania. The district road network consists of earth and gravel roads. AFCAP 8 aims at identifying low-cost, locally resource based methods of improving problematic lengths of road to provide sustainable rural access. An Environmentally Optimised Design ethos has been implemented to carry out research on a rural access road in Bagamoyo. The approach adopted is to utilise a number of different demonstration sections at specific locations along access roads according to the requirements of the surrounding road environment. The pavement types selected for demonstration cover 8 different forms of construction including concrete geocells, concrete strips, surface dressing, Otta seals, sand seals, slurry seals, hand packed stone and engineered natural materials. The construction of the demonstration sections is now complete and this report includes a description of the pavement construction methods.
