Artemisinin production and market needs: Meeting global demand. Bangkok, Thailand, 25-26 June 2007.

Abstract

This conference brought together a variety of people involved in the production of artemisinin (growers, extractors, pharmaceutical company representatives, researchers and donors) to discuss issues facing the industry and address problems such as market instability, to ensure a reliable suply of the drug. Ths subjects of presentations included: trends and evolution in the market for artemisinin combination therapies (ACTs); prequalification and quality assurance requirements for pharmaceutical ingredients; trends and evolution in artemisinin supply; good agriculture and collection practices; comparison of artemisinin extraction technologies; new developments in the artemisinin production chain; fast-track breeding of Artemisia annua; cultivation of Artemisia in Brazil; semisynthetic artemisinin; potential impact of new drug development; stability of current and new artemisinins; and the views of ACT manufacturers. Group discussions were held on the second day, and recommendations made.
