Artemisinin Enterprise conference 2008.

Abstract

The Artemisinin Enterprise comprises the Centre for Novel Agricultural Products at the University of York, UK, the Institute for OneWorld Health, UK, and the Medicines for Malaria Venture, Switzerland. This presentation begins by describing their work to increase artemisinin yields and develop semi-synthetic or fully synthetic versions. It then describes the AE's 3rd annual conference, held in York, UK on 8-10 October 2008: its objectives, the achievements and aims of the projects, potential challenges, and recommendations for the partners and other stakeholders. The conference concluded that the AE's innovations can significantly improve the supply shain for artemisinin combination therapies, that their introduction must be timely and effective, that stakeholder confidence is needed for their full potential to be realised, and that there is a time-limited opportunity to deliver success.
