Aquaculture in the Central and Northern Region of Malawi. Project Technical Report.

Abstract

This report represents part of a research project aiming to assess the socioeconomic dimensions of aquaculture development in Africa. The information presented was collected as part of a study of the economics of aquaculture in Malawi, commissioned by the EEC for the Central and Northern Regions Fish Farming Project. The objective was to consider aquaculture development in Malawi in the context of conclusions reached from the main ODA-funded research based in Luapula Province, Zambia. The report describes the Central and Northern Regions Fish Farming Project and discusses the following: Who are fish farmers and what motivates adoption of fish farming?, The economics and management of fish ponds, the effects of aquaculture adoption, and lessons for future policy and approach.
