Approaches to increase TB and HIV case-finding in Swaziland

Abstract

This study aims to maximise TB and HIV case detection to provide earlier diagnosis and therefore reduce morbidity, mortality and transmission rates. OBJECTIVES

To develop and establish a model for tracing, screening and testing of household contacts of TB patients; to develop and establish a model of HIV and TB screening in general outpatient departments; to evaluate the effectiveness of these case finding models for TB and HIV. The main part of the study is based at the TB outpatient department, Good Shepherd Mission Hospital, Lubombo: the region of Lubombo, has the second highest regional adult prevalence of HIV (26%) in Swaziland, and the country as a whole has the highest HIV prevalence in the world, estimated at 25.9% for adults aged 15-49.
