Application of genetic techniques for the production of monosex male tilapia in aquaculture: Early experiences from the Philippines.

Abstract

This conference paper outlines the need for and the production of genetically male tilapia for intensive culture in ponds in the Philippines. Details of harvest characteristics (such as weight, survival, yield and net return) from on-farm trials showed the advantages of GMT over mixed sex and hormonally reversed sex males. The paper concludes that use of GMT has considerable potential for improving yields and returns of tilapia.
