'Access' to microbicides: key challenges and possible scenarios.

Abstract

This presentation begins by introducing the issue of access by those that need them to vaginal microbicides for HIV prevention (the main components being availability, acceptability, accessibility and affordability). It then describes the challenges in ensuring access, some of the measures needed to ensure access, early- and next-generation microbicides and the results of trials, and the reasons for addressing access issues in 2007. Finally it indicates the dates when the results of trials of various HIV-prevention methods were obtained or were expected.
