A framework for research on sustainability indicators for agriculture and rural livelihoods. Working Paper 2.

Abstract

The overall goal of the project is to assist in the development of more effective, equitable and sustainable participatory management of renewable natural resources in sub-Saharan Africa. The purpose of the research is to identify the links between the sustainability of different farming systems and agricultural policy in South Africa and Uganda.

This paper sets out an analytical framework based on the Sustainable Rural Livelihoods approach, and uses this to generate a matrix of potential indicators compatible with five 'dimensions of sustainability' from commonly-used indicator frameworks. In doing this the authors have sought to bring together disparate components of the 'sustainability' literature into a single methodological approach.
