Appointments to the Attorney General’s civil panel counsel

The Attorney General is seeking to appoint new members to two of his panels of junior counsel, the London A and B panels, to undertake civil and EU work for government departments. There is a wide variety of expertise required, not just in Public Law, to meet the needs of government across the civil courts and tribunals.

Membership of the London panels is open to both barristers and solicitors with the appropriate qualifications.

London A panel

Members of the A panel deal with the most complex government cases in all kinds of courts and tribunals including the Supreme Court. They will often appear against QCs. Those previously appointed to the A panel have generally had in excess of 10 years’ advocacy experience in actual practice (from end of 2nd six months’ pupillage for barristers / date of commencement of advocacy for solicitors).

London B panel

Members of the B panel deal with substantial cases but not in general as complex as those handled by the A panel. They will generally be instructed where knowledge and experience of a particular field is required. Members of the B panel will often provide (but not exclusively) the A panel members of the future and so will be expected to show the potential to join the A panel. Those previously appointed to the B panel have generally had between 5 and 10 years’ advocacy experience in actual practice (from end of 2nd six months’ pupillage for barristers / date of commencement of advocacy for solicitors).

Applicants for London A panel are required to complete the A panel application form (MS Word Document, 106 KB) and to use the A panel reference form (MS Word Document, 78.5 KB).

Applicants for London B panel are required to complete the B panel application form (MS Word Document, 105 KB) and to use the B panel reference form (MS Word Document, 78.5 KB).

Completed applications must be received by midday, Friday 27 March 2015.

A competition to make appointments to the regional panel will take place in summer 2015.
