Working for British Embassy Sofia

General information

The British diplomatic presence in Bulgaria consists of the British Embassy Sofia. Staff at the mission fall into two groups:

  • UK-based staff: career diplomatic staff, employed directly by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) in London, and sent to work at posts abroad for periods of 3-5 years
  • Locally employed staff: local residents, employed in accordance with local employment law and practices

We do not process unsolicited applications. Only those applying for a specific position and who are selected for interview will be contacted. No applications will be returned.

All applicants must have a high level of spoken and written English (unless stated otherwise) and for most positions an additional fluency in Bulgarian will be required.

The Embassy will consider all applications and invite a selection of candidates for interview. All invited candidates can expect a competency-based interview conducted in English by a panel of embassy staff. During the interview, candidates will be asked about their work experience, career history and skills. Interviews may also include a short practical exercise testing specific skills required for each role.

A valid residence permit is required for all non-Bulgarian applicants.
