Glencore employees
The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has charged six former employees of Glencore with conspiring to make corrupt payments to benefit the company's oil operations in West Africa.
Martin Wakefield, David Perez, Alex Beard, Andrew Gibson, Paul Hopkirk, Ramon Labiaga have been variously charged in connection with the awarding of oil contracts spanning Cameroon, Nigeria and the Ivory Coast from 2007 to 2014.
Andrew Gibson, Martin Wakefield and David Perez have also been charged in relation to falsifying documents for an accounting purpose to Glencore’s London office, marked as service fees to a Nigerian oil consultancy.
All six individuals are former employees of the commodities company.
A trial is listed for 4 October 2027.
Case timeline
10 November 2025 – Arraignment hearing for Martin Wakefield, David Perez, Paul Hopkirk, Ramon Labiaga at Southwark Crown Court. The four defendants entered not guilty pleas to all charges brought against them.
10 September 2024 – Six former Glencore employees appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court charged with conspiring to make corrupt payments. David Perez charged for the first time.
1 August 2024 – SFO charged Alex Beard, Andrew Gibson, Paul Hopkirk, Ramon Labiaga and Martin Wakefield with conspiring to make corrupt payments.
