Low-emission vehicles eligible for a plug-in grant
You can get a discount on the price of some brand new low-emission vehicles through a grant the government gives to vehicle dealerships and manufacturers.
You do not need to do anything if you want to buy one of these vehicles - the dealer will include the value of the grant in the vehicle’s price.
Vehicles eligible for a grant
The amount of the grant depends on which category the vehicle is in. The 8 categories are:
- wheelchair accessible vehicles
- motorcycles
- mopeds
- small vans
- large vans
- taxis
- small trucks
- large trucks
Not all low-emission vehicles will get a grant. Only vehicles that have been approved by the government are eligible for a grant.

You may be able to get a grant towards the cost of converting a passenger vehicle into a wheelchair accessible vehicle.
To be eligible for a grant, the vehicle must:
- be converted from a passenger vehicle (sometimes known as a ‘category M1 vehicle’)
- have zero tailpipe CO2 emissions
- be able to travel at least 112km (70 miles) without any emissions
- cost less than £35,000 (recommended retail price, including VAT and delivery fees, not including cost of conversion)
The vehicles you can convert are:
- Citroen e-Berlingo
- Citroen e-Spacetourer Business M
- Citroen e-Spacetourer Business XL
- Nissan e-NV200 Combi (5 seater)
- Nissan e-NV200 Combi (7 seater)

The grant can pay for 35% of the price of a wheelchair accessible vehicle, up to a maximum of £2,500.
There are 1000 grants between 1 April and 31 March each year.
You can email the Department for Transport to find out how many wheelchair accessible vehicle grants are left.
