UK ship register presentation to Greek shipping audience
Advantages of UK ship registration promoted to key contacts in Greek shipping community.
UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) Greece hosted a presentation by the UK Ship Register (UKSR), part of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency at the British Residence in Athens on 21 November 2013. The presentation on the ‘Benefits of the UK Flag’ was followed by a Q&A session and a networking reception.
UK Ship Register
The UKSR is one of the best performing flags in the major port state control regimes and has a reputation for maintaining the highest international standards. Mr Debasis Mazumdar, Head of UK Ship Register and Mr Graham Candy UKSR Customer Account Manager gave a presentation demonstrating the flexibility and competitiveness of the UK Ship Registry. The comparative advantages of the UK flag and recent improvements were highlighted.
These include:
- The ‘UK Flag’ is one of the top performing flags on the Paris MoU and Tokyo MoU ‘white lists’
- The UK is included on the US Coastguard’s Qualship 21 initiative
- Dedicated Customer Service – 24/7 assistance throughout and after registration
- Registration costs among the lowest available with no annual renewal fees
- SPS plan approvals and verification audits at no cost to owners and operators
- MCA Quality Assurance offers certification to ISO 9001 (2008) and ISO 14001 (2004) standards with audits being taken in harmonisation with ISM & ISPS
Mr Debasis Mazumdar noted:
The UK Ship Register wants to work with quality ship-owners in Greece and worldwide to achieve safety through partnership. I welcome the opportunity to discuss the advantages of UK ship registration and speak about the ‘Benefits of the UK Flag.’ I feel that the quality standards set by reputable sections of the industry should not be compromised by sub-standard shipping. The quality of the UK Flag is non-negotiable.
Embassy event
The presentation was attended by a targeted audience of representatives from the Greek shipping community as well as other maritime professionals. Opening the presentation, Her Majesty’s Ambassador Mr John Kittmer acknowledged the strong shipping links between the UK and Greece and expressed his confidence on the potential of further collaboration. He said:
The UK and Greece can work more closely together and develop our relationship and interests further. Perhaps we can start to think of Piraeus and London as a truly integrated maritime cluster.
After the presentation the speakers engaged in dialogue with Greek delegates, answering their questions and providing guidance as required.
