British Ambassador Designate Hugo Shorter met with Prime Minister Tammam Salam this afternoon at the Grand Serail.

Following the meeting Ambassador Shorter said:

I just held a useful meeting with Prime Minister Tammam Salam. I told his Excellency that the UK would continue our strong support for Lebanon’s stability, security and independence. We believe strong state institutions, including the LAF and ISF, are key to securing these. So we will continue steadfastly to support the LAF and other state institutions such as the ISF in their determination to protect Lebanon’s sovereignty on its borders, and internally.

In light of recent developments, we are of course talking to Saudi Arabia and the Gulf countries about the best way to support a strong and sovereign Lebanon, and to ensure Lebanon gets the help it needs in these difficult times. I told PM Salam I welcomed his actions to-date in addressing the concerns expressed by GCC countries, and expressed the hope that an accommodation could be reached soon to safeguard the valuable ties between Lebanon and its partners.

We also discussed follow-up to the London Conference. We agreed on the importance of implementation by all partners of the commitments made in London. We agreed to stay in close touch on monitoring progress.
