National launch in Macedonia of the European human rights case law database for the countries of Western Balkans.

On 14 July in Skopje the Academy for Judges and Public Prosecutors hosted the launch for Macedonia of the European human rights case law database as part of a regional project to strengthen judicial capacities to incorporate and apply the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR) in their judgments and encourage judicial assistants, trainers and prosecutors to apply ECHR perspective to their legal analysis.

The event was officially opened by Justice Minister Arben Jashari, judge Mirjana Lazarova-Trajkova from the European Court of Human Rights, judge Aneta Arnaudova director of the Academy for judges and Public Prosecutors, our Charge D’Affairs Christine Winterburn and Biljana Braithewaithe, project manager from the AIRE Centre from the UK.

Our Charge D’Affairs Christine Winterburn said:

Human rights are strong priority for the UK. The UK government supports human rights, democracy and good governance around the world to increase Britain’s security, to protect British citizens overseas, and to secure political freedom globally. Our government supports democracy and the rule of law in a range of different ways through a range of programmes we have around the world. In Macedonia we use our programme assistance to work on diversity, anti-discrimination, intercultural dialogue, freedom of expression and furthering interethnic cohesion.

The project aims to help the countries of the Western Balkans to meet rule of law requirements necessary for closer association with and eventual membership in the European Union.
