Statement on Papua

This week a delegation are in London to meet with International Parliamentarians for West Papua (IPWP)

A spokesperson for the British Embassy in Jakarta said:

The UK fully respects the territorial integrity of Indonesia. We regard Papua as an integral part of Indonesia. We are pleased to see the positive steps taken by President Jokowi to address the ongoing issues facing Papua and West Papua Provinces, and we hope to see it enjoying the same level of peace, stability, human rights and prosperity as the other parts of Indonesia.

The UK Government does not support the activities of Benny Wenda or his views or other calls for separatism.

The UK Government supports freedom of speech and that includes us being prepared to listen to people we do not agree with so long as they are not in breach of UK law.
