Statement by the EU is following the latest developments in Bahrain

The EU is following the latest developments in Bahrain closely with concern. We are aware of the arrest of Khalil Al Marzooq of Al Wefaq on 17 September and urge the Government of Bahrain to ensure that due legal process is fully respected. The EU is also concerned by the opposition coalition’s subsequent decision on the 18 September to suspend its participation to the National Consensus Dialogue, until further notice. The success of this process depends on the constructive cooperation between the government, the opposition and all Bahraini citizens.

The only way to promote peace and stability in Bahrain is through a constructive and inclusive dialogue that addresses the legitimate aspirations of all Bahrainis. It is imperative to build the trust and confidence necessary for reconciliation. In this regard, we continue to monitor developments closely.
