The seminar entitled “The role of municipalities in the shift and adaptation of climate change practices” was held on 21 November as part of the closing of the project “Integrating climate change into municipal public policy”. The project was financed by the British Embassy’s bilateral fund and implemented by the NGO Adapt-Chile in cooperation with the Regional Ministerial Service for the Environment of the Metropolitan Region, the Municipality of Santiago, the Centre of Sustainable Urban Development (CEDEUS-UC), and the Centre for Climate and Resilience Research (CR2).

In his presentation, Ambassador Jon Benjamin highlighted the UK’s commitment to combat climate change and the need to implement these measures at a local government level.

The objective of the project was supporting municipal climate change management through the generation of proposals in three specific areas: reducing greenhouse gas emissions, opportunities in water management and decreasing the susceptibility to climate change impacts.

Representatives from 15 municipalities of the Metropolitan Region participated in the creation of these proposals during 4 workshops held in the month of October. The municipalities that participated in the project were: Santiago, Cerro Navia, Recoleta, Peñalolén, La Reina, Colina, Paine, Puente Alto, Lampa, La Pintana, Independencia, Pudahuel, Huechuraba, Calera de Tango and Estación Central.
