Remembrance Sunday in the Czech Republic
Remembrance Sunday, the second Sunday in November, is the day traditionally put aside to remember all those who have given their lives for the peace and freedom we enjoy today.
On this day, people across the nation pause to reflect on the sacrifices made by our brave service men and women. Remembrance Sunday will fall on Sunday 13 November in 2016 and the traditional ceremony will commence in the Olšany Commonwealth War Cemetery Prague at 10:40.
Poppy Appeal
On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, the First World War ended. Civilians wanted to remember the people who had given their lives for peace and freedom. An American, Moina Michael, inspired by John McCrae’s poem, “In Flanders’ Fields”, began selling poppies to friends to raise money for the ex-Service community. And so the tradition began.
In the UK, the Appeal is organised by the Royal British Legion and the money collected is used to support members of the armed forces, veterans and their families.
