Impressive British presence at major shipping show in Greece

UK companies network with Greek shipping community at Posidonia 2014 and explore opportunities in shipping related services.

Posidonia is the largest international gathering on the shipping calendar. It is a high profile maritime exhibition and conference that takes place every two years in Greece. It attracts:

  • exhibitors from over 90 countries
  • more than 18,500 visitors

Opportunities in Greek shipping sector

The Greek shipping sector offers significant opportunities for UK companies dealing in equipment and shipping related services and there are opportunities in the following fields:

  • banking
  • legal
  • insurance
  • chartering and brokerage
  • marine equipment

UK presence at Posidonia 2014

The UK presence at Posidonia 2014 was substantial. British representation included:

  • over 120 companies exhibiting with individual stands or jointly, with their local partners
  • a pavilion representing the Society of Maritime Industries

A large number of UK companies were present, including:

  • Lloyd’s Register
  • The Baltic Exchange
  • RINA
  • Inmarsat
  • Imarest
  • UK Hydrographic Office
  • Rolls Royce
  • Coldharbour
  • Alatas Worldwide
  • The Nautical Institute
  • Clarkson Research Services

UK participants had successful meetings and were able to make the most of the networking opportunities, including the parallel events and receptions which took place during Posidonia week.

Sir Alan Massey visits Posidonia 2014

Sir Alan Massey, Chief of Maritime and Coast Guard Agency (MCA), attended the exhibition on behalf of the British Government, reiterating the:

  • importance of the shipping industry for the UK government
  • long and successful relationship between the Greek shipping community and the UK maritime cluster

He attended the official opening of Posidonia with British Ambassador John Kittmer and toured the UK stands. After his visit he commented:

‘We value the long history of co-operation between our two countries, which over the years has helped us meet the challenge of global competition, but we also share priorities for the future. I was very pleased to be here for Posidonia 2014 and celebrate the succesful partnership between our two countries in the shipping industry. I am also glad to announce that HM Government will be providing its full support to London International Shipping Week in September 2015 and we hope to see many of you over to London for this event.’

During his visit to Greece, he had a meeting with the Chief of the Greek Coast Guard and met the team at Lloyds Register and Greek ship owners.

Reception at British Residence

Another focal point of the UK presence at Posidonia 2014 was the reception hosted at the British Residence on Tuesday 3 June. This year, the reception was particularly well attended with high-level guests from the shipping, financial and legal communities. In his welcome address the British Ambassador John Kittmer said:

My message this evening is that of partnership. The UK is ready to respond to the challenges of global shipping and keen to see an even stronger partnership with the Greek shipping community. Shipping is a substantial contributor to both our economies and the British Government is committed to ensuring that the UK remains the No.1 centre for the provision of maritime services”.
