British Ambassador Tom Fletcher met today with Army Commander Kahwaji, Police Chief Rifi and Head of General Security Ibrahim.

Ambassador Fletcher underlined strong UK solidarity for the state institutions during the caretaker period and beyond, and discussed further ways that the international community can back Lebanon’s stability through practical measures. They also covered the situation in Tripoli and on the Syria/Lebanon border, where Fletcher reinforced the importance of a strong international and Lebanese effort to prevent the Syria crisis spreading further. Britain is expanding its support to the Lebanese Army, as it responds to threats to Lebanon’s security and sovereignty, in line with Prime Minister Cameron’s recent letter to President Sleiman.
