London analysis: identifying science and technology businesses in Official Statistics
Policy makers are interested in identifying “Science and Technology” businesses in official data sources to better understand the contribution they make to the economy. However, the UK Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) used in such sources does not identify businesses in cross-cutting topics such as Science and Technology. This article suggests a new method for using the lowest-level building blocks of the UK SIC 2007 to create a Science and Technology category and sub-categories, including practical examples looking at London’s economy, as well as explanations of how to use the approach with different data sources.
