1 June 2026: UK-Singapore Trade Committee second meeting minutes

Updated 28 September 2026

On 1 June 2026, the UK and Singapore convened the second UK-Singapore Free Trade Agreement (UKSFTA) Trade Committee in London.

The meeting was co-chaired by Peter Kyle, in his capacity as UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade at the time, and Grace Fu, Singapore’s Minister for Sustainability and the Environment and Minister-in-Charge of Trade Relations.

Ministers reviewed progress in the longstanding bilateral trade relationship and exchanged views on global economic developments, multilateral trade issues, and areas for future co-operation.

1. Bilateral trade and economic co-operation

Ministers welcomed continued progress in the UK-Singapore economic partnership and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral trade and investment ties.

They welcomed progress on scoping discussions for a mutual recognition agreement on pharmaceutical good manufacturing practice, which would reduce duplicative inspections and facilitate market access for medicines.

Both sides also agreed to continue discussions regarding the 1975 UK-Singapore Bilateral Investment Treaty.

Ministers also had a productive exchange on co-operation on clean energy and emerging technologies, and developments in carbon pricing tools.

On trade measures, ministers exchanged views on recent UK steel safeguard measures and agreed on the value of maintaining constructive official-level engagement on trade and regulatory issues of mutual interest.

2. Multilateral and plurilateral trade co-operation

Ministers reaffirmed their shared commitment to an open, rules-based international trading system and discussed recent developments at the World Trade Organization (WTO), including outcomes and reflections from the 14th WTO Ministerial Conference. They also exchanged views on progress within the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), including the expansion and deepening of the agreement.

Looking ahead, ministers discussed opportunities for closer collaboration during the United Kingdom’s forthcoming G20 Presidency and Singapore’s Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Chairmanship in 2027.

3. Geopolitical and economic developments

Ministers exchanged views on the impact of evolving geopolitical and economic developments on global trade, energy, supply chains and economic resilience. They discussed their respective approaches to supporting economic security while maintaining the benefits of open markets and international trade.

Both sides reaffirmed the strength of the UK-Singapore partnership and their commitment to continued co-operation across bilateral, regional and multilateral trade priorities amid a more uncertain global environment.
