The SME Digital Adoption Taskforce was an industry-led group, set up to explore how small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can be supported to better adopt digital technology to improve their productivity. It was established in April 2024 by the Department for Business and Trade (DBT).
The taskforce set a bold ambition to make UK SMEs the most digitally capable and artificial intelligence (AI) confident in the G7 by 2035. It also wrote a final report that included 10 recommendations for government and industry.
This report, and the government’s response, was published as part of the Backing Your Business Plan in July 2025. In the government response, DBT set out its plans to address each recommendation, with an update originally scheduled for Spring 2026.
