Details

The Environment Act 2021 provided a new governance framework for the environment, with 4 main requirements:

  • a new oversight body
  • a long-term Environmental Improvement Plan (EIP) that must set out the steps the government will take to improve the natural environment
  • statutory targets
  • an Environmental Principles Policy Statement that applies across government

Parliament established the Office for Environmental Protection (OEP) as the new oversight body. It designated the government’s 25 Year Environment Plan as England’s first EIP.

This report is the OEP’s independent assessment of the government’s progress in improving the natural environment, in line with the EIP for England in 2021 to 2022. This is required by section 28 of the Environment Act 2021.
