Last year, communities and economies across the world faced unprecedented disruption due to the Covid-19 pandemic. By enabling collaboration and incentivising investment, IP will play an important part in beating Covid-19 once and for all. Unleashing innovation and creativity will be at the heart of the post-pandemic recovery and support. This will help British businesses to build back better. IP encourages innovation by giving people the confidence to invest in doing something new and better for society. The IPO corporate plan sets out how we will provide IP services within the right framework, nationally and internationally. This will support world-leading innovation and creativity.

The Intellectual Property Office’s ambition is to be the best IP office in the world. We will do this by providing excellent IP services, a legislative and policy framework that is world leading and by being a brilliant place to work. This Corporate Plan is the fourth step in the IPO Strategy.

To provide excellent IP services our priorities are to:

  • transform our services and provide a modern, efficient customer experience.

  • provide high quality IP rights services. We will aim to eliminate the historic patents backlog, as well as the trade mark and designs backlogs.

To create a world leading IP environment our priority is:

  • to increase our external impact and future proof the IP framework by working across government and with stakeholders. This will ensure that IP plays an effective role in unleashing innovation. We will focus on maximising how IP is understood, accessed and utilised. We will make sure the domestic IP framework gives the UK the competitive edge. We will make sure IP frameworks in target international markets are fit-for-purpose and enable UK businesses to grow.

To make the IPO a brilliant place to work our priority is:

  • to embed our ‘One IPO’ culture to enable all our people to contribute their best. This year we will focus on our future organisational needs. This includes leadership development, hybrid working and organisation design.
