Independent report

Independent criminal advocacy in England and Wales

Final report of an independent review led by Sir Bill Jeffrey on the provision of independent criminal advocacy services.

The review considered the provision of independent criminal advocacy services in courts in England and Wales, looking at the:

  • experience, capabilities and skills needed for these services
  • arrangements for training
  • standards needed to maintain and improve the quality of advocacy
  • future structure of the profession providing advocacy services

The review did not consider legal aid fee rates or public funding requirements, which were outside its remit.
