Published 27 June 2011
We were asked for the total amount spent using GPC cards for 2010/11, 2009/10, 2008/09, 2007/08, 2006/07 and 2005/06.
This is shown below:
2005/06 £7,375.08
2006/07 £21,547.14
2007/08 £73,847.69
2008/09 £203,702.93
2009/10 £195,911.84
2010/11 £113,299.76
As background, the increase in spending from 2007/08 onwards reflects a change in how the Department purchased its rail tickets, as this delivered significant efficiency savings. From the second half of 2007/08, the majority of rail tickets were purchased using the government procurement card through a central government contract. The Department has also, since May 2010, achieved significant savings through a policy of ministers and officials travelling standard class only.
