This report looks at de-industrialisation - the decline in the share of manufacturing in national employment - in the UK and US. It describes its development and identifies some of the factors responsible. It also looks at the British balance of payments, and examines how improvements in other sectors have helped offset a worsening performance in manufacturing trade.

This review was commissioned as part of the Foresight project on the future of manufacturing in the UK.
