This report provides an overview of disaster risk financing mechanisms. It reviews both traditional instruments that share the costs of disastrous events after they happen and instruments that contractually transfer risks before the events occur.
The report explores what financial-protection actions could be taken in the next 10 years that might reduce the impact of disasters occurring up to 2040.
This review was commissioned as part of the Foresight project on reducing the risk of future disasters.
