DPN 2/04: US priority claims and supporting documents

Published 3 September 2003

Since 30 July 2004 the United States Patent Office (USPTO) has been responding to requests for a certified copy of a design application by issuing on compact disc an electronic copy of the filed application in Portable Document Format (PDF). The copy includes an imaged certification statement and is digitally signed.

Applicants wishing to provide us with an electronic copy of a US priority document, may file the compact disc issued by the USPTO. A paper print-out from the compact disc will not be accepted as this will not carry the appropriate imaged certification statement and signature. The compact disc meets the requirements of Designs Rules 27 and 28 for verification of the document to the satisfaction of the Registrar. No other arrangements for filing electronic copies of priority documents can be accommodated at present. The procedure for filing certified paper copies is unaffected.
