The Biometrics and Forensics Ethics Group (BFEG) has been commissioned to provide independent advice to Home Office ministers on ethical issues related to biometrics, forensics, and data-driven projects.

The BFEG has been asked to consider and provide ethical advice on important issues including:

  • the Home Office biometrics programme
  • the use of large and complex Home Office data sets for data science projects
  • approaches to collection, use, retention and deletion of biometrics and extracted digital forensic material
  • policy and projects concerning forensic information databases

The BFEG may also identify projects for self-commission and provide advice to the Forensic Science Regulator and other relevant stakeholders.
