Professor Wendy Purcell

Biography

Professor Wendy Purcell became a BIS non-executive board member in July 2013.

Wendy is a life scientist and academic leader. She is President of Plymouth University and established its enterprise mission and ‘anchor’ institution status as Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive for over 7 years. She started her career in the National Blood Service and has an international reputation in biomedical research. Wendy is Chair of the National Council for Healthcare Science in Higher Education and a member of the Genomics Advisory Board.

Wendy was an inaugural board member of the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise and is a board member of the National Centre for Universities and Business. She is Director/Trustee of the Environmental Association of Universities and Colleges and a trustee of the National Marine Aquarium. Wendy previously acted as a special adviser to BIS on the Postgraduate Review and was expert adviser to the Witty Review on universities and growth. She continues to publish, including articles on disruption and distinctiveness in the higher education sector.
