Valerie Hughes D’Aeth

Biography

Valerie Hughes-D’Aeth was Chief HR Officer of the BBC and a member of the BBC’s Executive Committee from 2014 until the end of 2019. Prior to this she held the role of Group HR Director at Amey for five years and before that Group HR Director of Steria. Over her career she has worked across a broad range of organisations in a variety of sectors and countries, with particular focus on organisation efficiency and effectiveness, culture change and HR transformation. 

Valerie has been both Chair of the Board of the CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel Development) and a Non-Executive Director at DWP, since 2021. She also Chairs the department’s Nominations Committee; provides business advice and mentoring support; and contributes regularly to debates on commercial and people related issues.

Our non-executive directors are senior figures from outside the department who bring a diverse mix of expertise and skills from across the public and private sector. They all:

  • give guidance and advice to DWP leaders and ministers
  • support and challenge management on the department’s strategic direction
  • provide support in monitoring and reviewing progress
