Biography

Sonya Branch was appointed Executive Director, Enforcement, at the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) on 11 September 2013.

Sonya works closely with the Chief Executive. As a member of the CMA Board, she takes a risk-based approach to enforcement, seeks to promote a high standard of compliance, builds strong relationships with partners and acts as a strong advocate for competition in the UK and abroad.

She is also a Trustee of the national charity Target Ovarian Cancer.

Previous career highlights include:

  • Executive Director, Enforcement and Mergers, and Member of the Board and Executive Committee at the Office of Fair Trading (OFT)
  • leading investigations using the OFT’s mergers, antitrust, cartels and consumer enforcement powers
  • leading a Triennial Review at the Department of the Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (DEFRA)
  • Partner at the global law firm, Clifford Chance LLP, advising clients across a wide range of national and international mergers, acquisitions, markets and competition cases
