Shonnel Malani

Biography

Shonnel Malani was appointed Lead Non-Executive Director at the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology in April 2023.

Shonnel is an experienced business leader with over 20 years’ experience in the financial and private equity sectors. As Managing Partner of Advent International, he has overseen significant investment in innovative companies across the UK, US and Europe. He joined Advent International in 2011 and has led large companies through significant change in the engineering, space, and national security sectors.

Shonnel received his degree from McGill University (Montreal). He also achieved a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from the Fels Institute of Government and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from The Wharton School.

Shonnel has taken on non-executive roles at electronics and technology producers Ammeraal Beltech and Laird, as well as industrial engineering distributor Rubix. He is currently chair of UK-headquartered aerospace and defence companies Cobham and Ultra Electronics.

The main responsibilities of non-executive board members are to:

  • attend meetings of the departmental board, chaired by the Secretary of State
  • provide over-arching strategic guidance and insight to the department
