Sarah Atkinson


Sarah Atkinson joined the Charity Commission in June 2006 as Head of Corporate Affairs. She was appointed Director of Policy and Communications in October 2014. Before joining the commission, Sarah built her experience in communications and public policy in the private sector, most recently as Head of Public Affairs at Nationwide Building Society.

Sarah is a board member of Endometriosis UK and a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations Professional Practices Panel. She has a BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Oxford.

Director of Policy, Planning and Communications

The Director of Policy, Planning and Communications is accountable for policy development and media and stakeholder management, leading the teams that are responsible for:

  • exploiting the commission’s expertise and engaging with the sector and other stakeholders to:
    • formulate fit-for-purpose policy and guidance that reflects regulatory requirements and enables charities to flourish
    • develop research reports that share the commission’s unique perspectives and insights on charities in England and Wales
  • media and stakeholder relations, including public and parliamentary affairs, to promote the commission, its work and reputation, ensuring that it has an audible and respected external voice
