Richard Laux

Biography

Richard Laux has been Deputy Director, Data and Analysis, at the Cabinet Office’s Equality Hub since June 2021. Prior to that, he had a similar role in the Race Disparity Unit. Richard is the Chief Statistician of the Cabinet Office.

Richard has worked in official statistics for 30 years. His previous roles included senior posts in statistical policy and governance in the UK and abroad.

Before working at the Cabinet Office, Richard led a review of transport statistics at the Department for Transport. Prior to that, Richard was the Deputy Head of Regulation at the Office for Statistics Regulation, part of the UK Statistics Authority.

Richard is an experienced peer reviewer of national statistical systems. He has worked in many countries in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

Deputy Director, Data and Analysis

Leadership of a team responsible for:

  • commissioning new data sources and research to fill gaps in the evidence base
  • improving the quality of existing data sources
  • conducting analysis to provide new insights and knowledge – filling gaps in the evidence base – to help inform policy
  • conducting analysis to monitor and evaluate the impact of existing policies
  • improving the way in which our data is analysed and our analysis is communicated, and advising on the merits of others’ evidence
  • improving processes and methods
  • ensuring that the Hub’s statistics meet the standards of trustworthiness, quality and value set by the Code of Practice for Statistics
