Biography

Phil Blythe is Chief Scientific Adviser at the Department for Transport. He is also Director of the Transport Operations Research Group at Newcastle University.

Phil’s research has focussed on:

  • electronic tolling technology and smart payment systems
  • electric vehicles and the development of supporting infrastructure
  • automation of road vehicles and the interaction between humans and technology
  • technologies to assist older drivers to continue driving safer for longer
  • wireless sensing systems

DfT Chief Scientific Adviser

The Chief Scientific Adviser:

  • advises ministers, the board and senior officials on science and engineering
  • makes sure that the science and engineering evidence the department generates is high quality and fit-for-purpose
  • helps develop the department’s links with the wider science, engineering, technology and innovation community
