Peter Mather

Biography

Peter Mather is a Non-Executive Board Member (NEBM) of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ). 

Peter was previously Interim Lead Non-Executive Director at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), and prior to that a Non-Executive Board Member of the Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

Peter has a wealth of knowledge in energy - operational, commercial, business development, policy and strategy - with nearly 40 years of broad experience at BP. At the end of 2021 he stepped down from BP as Regional Senior Vice President, Europe, and UK Head of Country, where in this last role he was deeply involved with the company’s net zero strategy and energy transition.

He has sat on government councils for Jet Zero, Hydrogen, Carbon Capture Usage and Storage, as well as chairing the Business in the Community Climate Action Leadership team.

Non-executive board member

The main responsibilities of a Non-Executive Board Member are:

  • attend meetings of the Departmental Board, chaired by the Secretary of State
  • provide over-arching strategic guidance and insight to the Department
