Peter Hill joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1998. Before taking up his role in 2013 as Director of Strategy in the FCO, he worked in the Office for Security and Counter-Terrorism in the Home Office. In 2009-2010 he worked at the independent Chilcot Inquiry into the Iraq conflict. Between 2006-2009 he was in the cabinet of the European Trade Commissioner. He has also worked on a range of security and multilateral issues in the FCO and overseas.
Director of Strategy
The Director of Strategy is responsible for:
- policy planning: providing challenge and alternative perspectives; engaging with external organisations and thinkers on foreign policy in the UK and overseas
- improving the policy capability of the FCO
- helping to ensure FCO corporate and policy objectives are joined up, including by overseeing the deployment of staff from the Projects Task Force to priority issues
