Nick Astbury has been Deputy High Commissioner to Jamaica and the Bahamas since November 2016. His previous postings include Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, as well as serving as Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Eritrea and as Deputy Consul-General in New York.
His assignments in the UK have included Head of the joint DFID/FCO Sudan Unit, Deputy Head of the joint Home Office/FCO UKvisas Department, Private Secretary to two FCO Ministers, FCO Press Officer and work on European Union issues.
Nick holds a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Master of Arts in Legal and Political Theory from University College London, where he captained the College for Rowing. He also holds a Master of Business Administration from the Open University. His hobbies include travel, scuba diving, photography and reading.
Deputy Head of Mission, British High Commission Kingston
The Deputy Head of Mission is a senior diplomat and typically a key advisor to the Ambassador or High Commissioner. The Deputy is responsible for the daily management of an overseas Embassy or High Commission. They will represent the UK’s interests in the absence of the Ambassador as Chargé d’Affaires. A senior ranking Deputy may also take the title Minister. Smaller missions may not have a Deputy Head.
