Nicholas Hopton took up his appointment as Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Qatar in July 2013.
Mr Hopton is a career diplomat who joined the FCO in 1989 and has served most recently as Ambassador to Yemen. He has worked on national security issues in the Cabinet Office, led the International Organisations Department in the FCO and has European policy experience from postings in Paris and Rome and time as Private Secretary to the Minister for Europe.
On his appointment as Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Qatar, Mr Hopton has said:
I am delighted to be going to work in Doha at this important time. Qatar is a remarkable country making a huge political and economic impact across the region. The UK values highly the historical relationship that binds our two nations tightly together. I look forward to working with Qatar’s leaders to make our partnership even stronger and more effective.

The Ambassador represents Her Majesty The Queen and the UK government in the country to which they are appointed. They are responsible for the direction and work of the Embassy and its Consulates, including political work, trade and investment, press and cultural relations, and visa and consular services.
