Dr Mina Golshan CBE

Biography

Mina is a senior leader with 20 years experience in nuclear and high-hazard industries; including nuclear power, decommissioning, and research and development in public and private sectors. She is a Board member of SZC Nuclear New Build Generation Ltd, joined SZC in 2021 as its Safety, Security and Assurance Director. In January 2023, Mina was appointed as non-Executive Director of Nuclear Waste Services (NWS), a wholly subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. She is Chair designate of NWS Health, Safety, Security, environment and Sustainability committee and a core member of its Programme and Projects Committee.

Mina Joined SZC after more than 12 years at the Office for Nuclear Regulation where she served as a Director since 2015 leading a team responsible for regulation of a diverse portfolio and a budget of over £3.5 billion covering enrichment and fuel manufacture, defueling and decommissioning as well as waste management and remediation sites including Sellafield. While continuing in this role, in 2017 she was appointed by the UK Government as Senior Responsible Officer leading a team that established the UK State system of accountancy and control of nuclear material (UK safeguards).

Prior to joining ONR and its predecessor orgnanisation, she worked in a range of positions within private and public sector including for over 5 years in Science and Technologies Facilities Council, responsible for operation and safety of a state of the art facility for studying stress and strain in safety critical components.

She has been a member of several Government Advisory Groups including the Plutonium disposition steering committee, AGR defuelling Programme and the Great British Nuclear. The latter was established in May 2022 to optimise the structures and processes necessary to secure accelerated and cost-effective development of the civil nuclear programme in the UK.

Mina has vast experience of leading in international fora and conventions and was the immediate past Chair of IAEA’s Waste and Decommissioning Standards Committee and elected Vice President of the 7th Convention on the safety of spent fuel and radioactive waste which was held in 2022 at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna.

In 2021 New Year’s honours, Mina was appointed by Queen Elizabeth II “Commander of the Order of British Empire” in recognition of services to nuclear regulation, and in August 2022 an Honorary Fellow of the Nuclear Institute.

Mina holds a PhD in Physics from University of London.
