Mike Weir

Biography

Mike Weir was a Solicitor from 1981 until his election to the Westminster Parliament in 2001. He served as MP for Angus from 2001 to 2017and on several select committees - Scottish Affairs (2001 - 2005), Trade and Industry (2005 -2007), Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (2007 - 2008), Business and Enterprise (2008 - 2009) and Energy and Climate Change (2005 - 2010) He was a member of the Panel of Chairs (2005 - 2015), in which capacity he chaired debates and Standing Committees. He was also spokesman for the SNP group on several subjects during his time in Parliament and SNP Chief Whip Form 2015 to 2017.

Member of the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments

The role of the committee is to:

  • provide independent advice to the Prime Minister on the application of the government’s Business Appointment Rules to the most senior members of the Civil Service, armed forces, diplomatic service, and intelligence agencies who wish to take up appointments within 2 years of leaving Crown service
  • provide independent advice directly to former ministers on appointments they wish to take up within 2 years of leaving government
